Igor Stravinsky was a very important composer of the 20th century. His life was divided into three periods, the Russian, the neoclassical, and the serial period. The tango was created during the second period, when Stravinsky settled in America. During this period, Stravinsky became increasingly interested in the American music style, with the Tango being one of them.
Stravinsky’s Tango is written in a minuet and trio form, but in the place of the minuet was actually a tango. The whole piece has a combo style, with the first part chords performed by the brass, and the melody by a clarinet. The trio was more gently, but the Tango style was still there, after taking dominance with piu forte. The tango was one of the most rhythmically regular works by Stravinsky, consisting of four-bar phrase structures. It also contains polyphony in the trio. All these ideas are examples of Stravinsky’s neoclassic approach.
